Ballerina

Date
1930s
Description

Wood engraving on laid japon volant paper.

Edition unknown. Scarce.
Pinto depicted ballerinas both in print and in painting. They usually do not respond to the expected figure of the typical ballerina. Rather, they are muscular and seemingly taller figures. Where this inspiration came from is unclear. Amusingly, flowers are often part of these portraits. In our print no flowers can be found, but a watering can is resting on the floor, suggesting their presence nearby. This type of discreet whimsy is often part of Pinto’s work.
Signed in pencil.
