Off to Japan!

Date
1922
Description

Color woodcut (woodblock print in Japanese manner, with water-based inks) on laid Japan paper, 1922 (?).
No other impression is known of this print to date and it is not even in possession of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.
Signed with the swastika in black ink, as usual for Isaac’s prints.
Annotated on the verso (see description below).

A young girl sits in a boat of her own making, seemingly a simple wooden box. She has affixed a steering wheel and sail. She is flying the colors of Japan, looking into the distance, at what is surely the shore of Yokohama or Tokyo. Perhaps she has also gone back in time and is setting her sights on Edo. This dear little print is likely a project for a menu or a card. It is annotated Françoise 1922 on the verso, in ink. We have no other clues as to what the artist’s intention was with this print, or who Françoise might be.
