Farewell to the Sailors at Sunset

Color linocut on smooth wove paper.

Stated edition of 40, but quite unlikely given the scarcity of her prints. 

Signed, dated and numbered in pencil.  Artist is widely known as Hannie Bal.

Some condition issues in the left margin: missing top corner, tear in center sheet edge, crease and smudge in bottom.  All issues away from the image with the sheet in very good condition overall, aside from these. 

Women printmakers active right after the war in Northern Europe were few. This is an ambitious print in two colors, made by one of the rare female artists who had received a formal education in that part of the world at that time. It is an attractive and unusual mixture of naïve art influence with a geometric esthetic.
