Johanna Anna Maria Schrofer-Bal

Born in 1921, Dutch artist Johanna Anna Maria Bal—affectionately called Hannie by her contemporaries—was guided into art after an aunt recognized her creative potential, steering her away from the traditional education expected of her middle-class upbringing. Defying convention, she married her teacher, Willem Schrofer, who was 23 years her senior, and together they co-founded The Hague’s Verve group with fellow artists.

Despite early widowhood and the upheaval of World War II, Schrofer-Bal sustained a long and productive career as a painter, watercolorist, and draftsman. She also raised four children, including the noted Dutch furniture designer Frans Schrofer. Her work, marked by innovation and resilience, flourished across decades until her passing in 2012.
