The Night Watch
La Ronde de Nuit (original French title)
Etching, drypoint, and aquatint on laid paper, 1878.
Reference: Bourcard & Goodfriend 70 i/iii. This is thought to be one of two known impressions of this state of the print, therefore rare in the extreme.
The subject is somewhat familiar (look up "Pluie et Parapluie"). We are in a different part of town, the old woman has been replaced by a night watchman, the dogs have given place to ducks, but it is still raining.
Signed in the plate "Félix Buhot", almost invisibly, in the lower left plate corner, and with a tiny monogram in the upper right plate corner, as if it could be mistaken for the work of any other artist.
The impression is vivid and fresh, as though it had just come off the press, which is quite impossible, as the third state makes many changes.
With the J and G (Jim Goodfriend) initials, forming a butterfly stamped on the verso.
