View full detailsOdilon Redon (1840-1914) was, by a longshot, the most idiosyncratic artist of the 19th century. While other artists would have broken with tradition in some way, Redon broke with the past in every way he could think of. Inspired very heavily by Eastern religions and philosophies, and seeped in his own Christian tradition, Redon created images that seem to have been catapulted from another world into his. Whether drawing portraits, still-lives, mythological figures, mystical visions or landscapes, Redon never fails to surprise in his treatment of the subject. He was a prolific painter and also worked avidly on lithographs, which are still today regarded as some of the very best the technique ever has had to offer.
