Young Woman Bathing
Jeune Femme au Bain (original French title)
Etching on laid paper, after 1866.
Reference: Beraldi 423.
In Rembrandtian tradition, Charles Jacque drafts some of the finest lines of his etched oeuvre. This simple nude study uses a traditional contrapposto (think Michelangelo’s David in Florence) to accentuate the elegant lines of the woman’s torso, hips, and legs. The effect is one of traditional beauty that makes it seem like it was created in the middle of the 17th century, as etching was reaching its first pinnacles of expression, rather than in the middle of the 19th century, as it was being rediscovered by French artists. This is a true “etching revival” print; and of the finest quality.
