Le Haut d’un Battant de Porte (original French title)

Etching on chine-collé on wove paper, 1852-65.
Reference: Beraldi 110 v/v; Bouillon.

Our impression from the published state by Alfred Cadart for his Société des Aquafortistes, with letters. While this plate was etched in 1852, this edition banked on Bracquemond’s rising popularity, and was reprinted in 1865. The artist even went as far as to change the date in the plate.

Very faint foxing in the margins.

TEXT:

(FR) Ici, tu vois tristement pendre
Oiseaux pillards et convoiteux…
A leurs pareils c’est pour apprendre
Que voler et voler sont deux.

(ENG) Here you see, sadly hanging
Pillaging and Greedy Birds…
By comparison we are thus learning
That flying and stealing are two.
