La Femme du Meunier (original French title)

Charcoal, crayon and white chalk drawing on gray laid paper with CF in crest watermark.

Drawings by the favorite painter of Napoléon III are scarce.  The overwhelming majority are studies which carry minimal interest out of context.  Ours, a particularly finished drawing, is an unusual subject for this artist.  Cabanel was known for social portrait of the upper echelons of society.  This elegant composition of a working-class women stands out.
