James Jacques TISSOT (French, 1836-1902): "Gruesome Ax Murder". Etching printed in brownish-black ink on wove paper, 1860. Reference: not in Wentworth. This is most certainly Tissot’s earliest print. It was not known to Wentworth, and only a handful of impressions were ever pulled. With the artist’s red monogram stamp, but not the stamp usually found on his prints (not in Lugt). Signed and dated in the plate. Plate size: 3 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches.
