Girl and Pimp

Date
circa 1906
Description

Fille et Souteneur (original French title)

Ink drawing with watercolor highlights.
An endearing composition, of a seemingly reluctant couple, facing the reality of selling sexual favors on the streets of Paris.
Certainly an illustration for newsprint.  We have yet to identify which one.
Drawings by Charles Martin are very scarce.
In very fine condition with fresh colors.
Signed in ink.

We also reproduce an illustration by Martin, published in Le Rire in 1906.  It is shown exclusively as a comparison (it is not being sold with the drawing).  It also depicts a woman and her pimp, around town at night, discussing how cheap he is, in light of the work she does all year.  He's apparently proposed to buy her some roasted chestnuts...
