RITSCHEL, William
Gouache and pastel on paper, mounted to second sheet. Signed and dated in ink.
The celebrated German-born American painter, William Frederic Ritschel (1864–1949) became a central figure in early California Impressionism, known for his luminous seascapes and expressive handling of atmosphere and light. But before settling in Carmel in 1911, Ritschel first arrived in New York in 1895. These years became a rich transitional period for him, where the academic rigor of his German training met the more expressive and immediate approach of plein air technique. Works on paper from 1905 are rare and offer a window of insight into his evolving style before the move west. His works are held in major institutions, including the de Young Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the National Academy of Design.
