William J. PATTERSON

Trained at the Hartford Art School and Syracuse University, William Joseph Patterson (b. 1941) developed a refined printmaking practice rooted in both classical and contemporary influences. As an Abbey Fellow in Rome, he immersed himself in the European tradition of narrative etching, a sensibility that would carry through in his mature work.

His print Sleep exemplifies the subtle emotional range of Patterson’s etchings and aquatints. Like many of his works, it blends tonal atmosphere with figural nuance—suggesting introspection and vulnerability. A long-time member of the Society of American Graphic Artists and the Boston Printmakers, Patterson created prints often issued through publishers like Associated American Artists. His work has been collected by the Library of Congress, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, and the New Jersey State Museum.
