Willem van der BERG

The son of artist Andries van den Berg, who taught at the Koninklijke Academie in The Hague, Willem van der Berg (1886-1970) was a successful Dutch painter and printmaker known for his realism and pastoral scenes. A deep source of inspiration came from his visits to the small, conservative, Catholic fishing village of Vollendam, located north of Amsterdam. This influence led him to spend several decades depicting the Vollendamers, lovingly detailing their solemn faces and traditional dress.
