Wilhelm Schmidt-Hild was a German painter, printmaker, illustrator, and educator. Born Wilhelm Schmidt in Hildesheim in 1876, he studied at the teachers’ college in Northeim, the Kunstgewerbeschule in Hanover, and the Kunstakademie in Kassel. He later adopted the name Schmidthild, also written Schmidt-Hild, in reference to his native city.
Schmidt-Hild worked across painting and graphic media, becoming particularly known for landscapes, maritime subjects, animals, and detailed illustrations of birds and plants. His travels through Scandinavia, South America, Italy, and various regions of Germany broadened his range of subjects, while his prints combined close observation with a strong decorative sense.
From 1931 until his retirement in 1938, he taught as a professor at the Staatliche Zeichenakademie in Hanau. He subsequently worked as an independent painter, illustrator, and graphic artist. Schmidt-Hild died in Germany in 1951.
