Thorvald Simeon Niss (1842–1905) was a celebrated Danish landscape painter and occasional printmaker whose atmospheric visions of sea and land earned him a place among the Skagen Painters—an influential Nordic artist colony known for their plein-air naturalism. While painting remained his primary medium, Niss also produced a small number of etchings and lithographs—likely dating from the 1890s—many of which echo the themes and moods of his oil paintings: stormy seas, vast skies, and tranquil forest glades. These prints, often signed with his monogram “TN,” are rare and not extensively catalogued, adding to their intrigue for collectors of Danish art. Niss was widely recognized during his lifetime. He was awarded the Eckersberg Medal and later the Thorvaldsen Medal—two of Denmark’s most prestigious art honors. His works were exhibited internationally, and today they are held in major Danish museum collections.
