View full detailsInspired by Japanese prints and the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement, painter and printmaker Sydney Lee (British, 1866–1949) helped advance the revival of woodcut and wood engraving in the early twentieth century.
His landscapes, architectural subjects, and coastal scenes are distinguished by broad, simplified forms and carefully balanced areas of color. After studying at the Manchester School of Art and the Académie Colarossi in Paris, Lee taught at London’s Central School of Arts and Crafts. He became a founding member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920 and was elected to the Royal Academy in 1930.
Lee’s prints unite Japanese-inspired design, technical experimentation, and an acute sensitivity to atmosphere.
