View full detailsCleveland‑based photographer Steve Cagan has built his practice over five decades around activist or socially engaged photography, a mode of documentary practice deeply rooted in solidarity and collaboration with communities in struggle. Since the mid-1970s, his work has spanned global labor protests, factory closures, housing justice efforts, and environmental and cultural threats posed by aggressive mining techniques. He describes his practice as a form of activism, an intentional departure from traditional documentary work, with an emphasis on building trust and sharing agency with the people he photographs.
Cagan has exhibited internationally and earned two Fulbright Fellowships, as well as NEA and state arts council funding, among other honors.
