View full detailsAlfred East (1844-1913) was a British painter and etcher from Kettering, who was trained at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. Influenced heavily by the French Barbizon School of landscape paintings and etchings, East seems to have been well-connected, and well-travelled. He is known to have travelled to Spain, France, and as far as Japan, where he worked for six months. His work was successfully exhibited at galleries such as the famed Fine Art Society. East was made an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1899 and awarded Knighthood in 1910. Alfred East’s etchings are scarce. He only published a few, and printed a few more atmospheric compositions in small editions. While the former generally are unsigned, impressions of the latter are. These etchings, while very inexpensive today, are beautifully composed, executed with virtuosity, and compare in quality with some of the best early impressionist etchings.
