Shoichi HASEGAWA

Born in Yazu, Japan, Shoichi Hasegawa (1929-2023) was taught painting and drawing back home.  However Haseagawa left his native country in the early 1960s to settle in France, where he still lives today.  Trained as a printmaker in part at Atelier 17, under the skilled supervision of Stanley William Hayter, he became versed in many intaglio techniques.  Mixing a variety of tools and chemicals to obtain rich textures on his plates, Hasegawa prints using different viscosity of inks.  He thus creates vibrant color tapestries.  His compositions suggest places, often evoked with white or light-colored lines floating above abstracted color fields.  His style is unmistakable and his attractive use of color, generally bright.
