Shirley Witebsky

An accomplished American sculptor and printmaker, Shirley Estelle Witebsky (1925-1966) studied at the University of Minneapolis (B.A. in Art & Printmaking, 1945) before advancing her practice at Atelier 17 in Paris under Stanley William Hayter around 1952. Her work embraced experimentation in color viscosity intaglio printmaking—a technique pioneered in that atelier. There she met fellow printmaker—and future husband—Krishna Reddy. She was the only female participant in the 1964 International Sculpture Symposium in Montreal, placing her among the most pioneering artists of her generation.

Witebsky produced richly layered, abstract compositions before her life was tragically cut short by illness at age 40.
