VON NEUMANN, Robert

Robert Von Neumann (1888-1976) was born in a Baltic Sea port town called Rostock, Germany and started his studies At the United States Schools for Applied Arts in Berlin before serving in the German infantry in World War I. After he was discharged from the army with egregious wounds that would require him to have an artificial foot, Neumann emigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the United States. He was enamored with the American Regionalist art movement and began to create art in this style. His German art training served him well, as Regionalism favored strong lines and stoic depictions of the everyday working class. Coming from a German town on the water and settling in one of the largest cities on the impressive Lake Michigan, fishing industries were often the subject of his artwork.
