View full detailsA German printmaker and painter based near Hamburg, Reimer Riediger (1942–1991) created etchings and aquatints that quietly evoke place, memory, and atmosphere. Much of his work is noted for its regional specificity—rendering the harbors, inns, and windmills of northern Germany in a restrained, moody palette. With its night setting, mysterious figure, empty waterfront structures, and a pale, suspended moon, the aquatint Neumühlen (1987) seems an homage to the poetic surrealism of Paul Delvaux, and is among his most compelling prints. But what inspired the artist? A once-quaint strip of land along the Elbe River in Hamburg—formerly a village, later absorbed into urban renewal? Neumühlen is not just a place; it is a moment suspended in reverie.
