Paula GERARD

Paula Gerard (1907-1991) was an artist and educator in the Upper Midwest of the United States for most of her life. Born in Brighton (United Kingdom), she studied art in Florence, Brussels and Paris, and moved to Chicago in 1936. She taught at both the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee and the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Her style is challenging to categorize, as she was not only talented at many genres, but also in many different artistic media. Her portraits are light and ethereal, resembling sketches with portions of her subjects fading before the plate’s edge, or ghostlike figures lightly outlined in the background. Her abstract prints have a lightness as well, but the range of color and imagery has a quiet strength to it, with compositional references to Georgia O’Keefe. Her work is in public collections across the United States and she was a professor emeritus at the School of the Art Institute until her passing in 1991.
