View full detailsDespite being of a weak constitution, and seemingly the consummate Parisian, Norbert Goeneutte (1854-1894) travelled extensively and lived the last years of his short life outside the city. An impressionist painter and etcher, Goeneutte left views of Paris, Antwerp, Normandy… Life in the city and small towns alike seem to draw him in. And while they subjects are picturesque, Goeneutte managed to avoid sentimental renditions. Whether using drypoint, etching or a touch of mezzotint and aquatint, he rendered his subject with simplicity. The small scale of most of his prints draws the viewer in, and show a surprising warmth, despite the clean inking of his plates. Goeneutte left behind about 200 prints and probably about the same number of paintings.
