Description

Cité Solitaire (original French title)

Color aquatint and soft-ground etching, likely printed in simultaneous color printing technique (viscosity printing) on wove paper, 1965.

Edition of 60, but apparently quite scarce, as most of the artist’s prints.
It seems the artist made prints that were quite dimensional and this one is no exception. The composition is embossed throughout the plate, and strong relief is visible on the verso of the sheet. The artist is said to have soldered bits of cut-out metal to the plate, before etching it throughout. Through her work in Paris at Atelier 17 and in New York at the Pratt Institute, she would have encountered some of the most cutting-edge intaglio printmakers of her time in highly collaborative environment. Nono Reinhold clearly soaked it up all the while developing her own abstract geometric style, sometimes reminiscent of early Piet Mondrian abstraction.

Signed, titled, dated, and numbered in pencil.
