Interesting trial proof, printed à l’essence (usually turpentine), of the rare 1st state with all the marginal sketches in pale tones and the main subject strong.
Printed close to the sheet’s edges on three sides and with a small margin at the bottom.
Inscribed in pencil on the verso “Col. HB.” (Henrietta Buhot, the wife of the artist).
With the J and G (Jim Goodfriend) initials, forming a butterfly in pencil, on the verso.
