Description

Matinée d’Hiver sur les Quais (original French title)

Etching, aquatint, roulette, and likely touches of drypoint printed on thick white wove paper; that sheet trimmed by the artist on the platemark and tipped down (at the top of the sheet) to a larger sheet of laid paper with a larger plate area and which has only the impress, inky in places, of this second plate, circa 1880.
Reference: Bourcard & Goodfriend 158 iv/vii.
Buhot had clearly not been able to put to rest everything he had wanted to do with the previous incarnation of "the Cabstand" (see: “Une Matinée d’Hiver au Quai de l’Hotel-Dieu”, B & G 123), resulting in this new plate of a similar subject, this one crowded with figures next to and across from the cabs. In this state, the man with the broom has a white hat and a white jacket. They turn black successively in the next two states, along with other changes to the plate.
A beautiful, richly inked trial proof impression. With Buhot’s signature and annotation “Epreuve du 3e Etat” in pencil, which appears on this second sheet, evidence that the assemblage was his idea.
With the J and G (Jim Goodfriend) initials, forming a butterfly stamped on the verso.
Plate size: 10 ⅜ x 14 ⅜ inches. White sheet size: 10 x 13 ¾ inches.
Damage to the bottom (laid paper) sheet, repaired losses, tears, and a few specks of foxing in the left margin, none of it affecting the plate area.
