Thomas le Hardouay, from L’Ensorcelée
Original drawing in watercolor, gouache, crayon, pen and ink on card stock wove paper, circa 1877. We add an impression of the etching, with drypoint and scraper on laid paper, 1877.
Reference: Bourcard & Goodfriend 88 iii-iv/vi. Undescribed state between three and four, with most of the remarques diminished and scraped over, and with the addition of another bold signature and dated “23 Juillet 77” in reverse in the plate.
Plate 4 from his series of six illustrations for "L’Ensorcelée" by Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly. Buhot’s drawings for this project ranged from tiny to unexpectedly large; this one is the same size as the printed image and in the same direction. It should be noted that the artist often made drawings AFTER the related print.
With the J and G (Jim Goodfriend) initials, forming a butterfly stamped on the verso of both sheets.
