Rooster at Rest
Coq au Repos (French title)
Color woodcut (woodblock print in Japanese manner, with water-based inks) on thin laid Japan paper, circa 1908-1912.
One of few impressions, as is usual with most of Isaac’s work. He almost never printed editions.
An impression can be found in France’s Bibliothèque Nationale (click here).
Signed with the swastika in black ink and with the monogram stamp in red (Lugt 4990).
This print may have been created with the help of Urushibara Yoshijirô. At the very least some impressions were pulled with the assistance of the Japanese master, who seems to have taught Isaac at least some of the rudiments of carving and printing woodblocks in Japanese manner. Some impressions bear Urushibara’s seal.
A beautiful and large composition with fresh colors. A faint water stain to the left of the rooster’s head. Still, an impression to own given the vibrancy of the colors and the scarcity of this print.
