Nathan MARGOLIS

A lifelong resident of Philadelphia, painter and printmaker Nathan Margolis (1908-1964) came of age at the perfect time to fully embrace the WPA era in America. After earning an MA from Temple University, he attended classes at the Barnes Foundation, and in 1938 he received a Harvard Fellowship to study in Italy. From 1940 through the early 1960s, Nathan Margolis exhibited his art in New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Chicago.
The artist's wife, Adele, is the model for his well-known lithograph Vogue Sews. As a talented artist in her own right and a professional seamstress, they collaborated on a book that remains popular to this day. Adele gifted her husband with his first set of paints while dating. In 1953, Nathan and Adele Margolis were targeted by the House Committee on Un-American Activities and called for questioning. Nathan Margolis was a full member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Print Club, the American Color Printers Society, and the Philadelphia Art Alliance.
