While his esthetic tends to be expressionistic compositionally, his propensity to the use of bright colors reminds the viewer often of Southern French influences. The Fauves, Derain and Matisse in particular, were de Vlaminck’s closest artistic friends. He did, however forge his own path, mostly teaching himself techniques, both as a printmaker and a painter. His early prints are expressionistic woodcuts, but the bulk of his graphic oeuvre is lithographic, both monochromatic and in color. His very personal, often brooding style is unmistakable.
