View full detailsMartin Erich Philipp (1887-1978) was born in Zwickau, studied art and applied arts at two of Dresden’s best-known academies, before settling the in Dölzschen discrict of the city, where he spent all his life. He is remembered today for creating elegantly composed color woodcuts, using sophisticated color combinations that suited his subject matters. Philipp liked to depict animals, in particular exotic birds. But he also carved beautiful floral compositions, some rather stiff, some very lifelike.
While the color woodcuts are why he is often remembered, the many etchings and drypoints he created should not be overlooked. His skilled drawing shows in these monochromatic compositions. Many also depict animals, but a greater diversity of subjects can be found in his etchings: from portraits to ephemera. He illustrated books with his etchings as well. This seems to have encouraged him to create quite a few erotic compositions, some of which very explicit. When it came to nudes, which form a substantial part of his etchings, many are whimsical and quite elegant as well.
