Le Fils de Ludovic Halévy, Assis sur une Chaise

Date
1879
Description

Printed on D & C BLAUW laid paper. Ref: Clément Janin 119 ii/ii. Impression of the second state of two, after work in the chair was added. Edition unknown; likely one of few impressions only, scarce. The sitter is Daniel Halévy (1872-1962), a French historian, son of the famous playwright Ludovic Halévy (1834-1908). In this composition he is approximately 7 years old, sitting quietly, wearing shorts on a chair. In another composition, which is also dated 1879, Daniel looks quite a bit younger however (see additional images). This is also suggested by the fact that he still wears an apron, rather than shorts. Children of young age, and who were not clean yet, were dressed in dress-like apparel, so cleaning up messes was easier.
