View full detailsA prominent and influential artist in his time, Louis Rhead (1857-1926) was an artist at the crossroads of the Anglo-Saxon Arts and Crafts and the French Art Nouveau movements. Known particularly for his posters during the 1880s and 1890s, he turned his talents towards book illustrating more avidly after 1900. From his native England he took much instruction in ceramic design; in particular from his father George W. Rhead. Some of his esthetic was clearly influenced by years of arts education during puberty in Paris. His style was further rounded by the arts encountered upon arrival in the United States in 1883. Rhead spent the rest of his life in Brooklyn, NY.
