Lillian SCALZO

Artist and educator Lillian Scalzo's (1900-1984) eclectic career encompassed a range of mediums, including printmaking, painting, watercolor, enameling, fiber art, and costume design. Born in Springfield, Illinois, she was a talented violinist who initially planned a career in music. Around 1919, she discovered her passion for art and began her studies at the Springfield Art Association. From 1920 to 1922, she attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, later supplementing her education with summer courses at the Art Institute of Chicago and the progressive New Bauhaus (later the IIT Institute of Design). She considered her time at the New Bauhaus, studying under László Moholy-Nagy, to be her most valuable training. There, she developed an integrated approach to art and design that informed her diverse body of work.

Scalzo’s prints are seldom found but stand as striking evidence of her technical prowess and creative resolve, as well as her ability to infuse local Midwestern themes with modernist sensibilities.
