View full detailsAmerican painter and printmaker Lawrence Murray Heyman was born June 30, 1932 in Washington DC. After obtaining his BFA from the Tyler School of the Arts at Temple University, Heyman served in the United States Army from 1955-1957. After his years in the service Heyman studied both in DC and in Paris. While he eventually obtained his MFA at American University in 1972, other formative studies took place in Paris. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, but also studied experimental printmaking techniques extensively with Krishna Reddy at Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17, seemingly in two stints, from 1960 to 1963, and again from 1969 to 1970. This later stint resulted in a number of publications with Antharès, éditions d’art, Saint Cloud, France, which was illustrious in the printmaking world at the time. His prints were mostly created in the manner developed by Krishna Reddy, using deeply carved metal plates, printed in simultaneous color printing (color viscosity printing), which result in unexpected, painterly color transitions.
After returning Stateside, Heyman taught printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design for 10 years. Once retired from teaching, he remained a self-employed artist, living and working in Providence, RI. Known to his family and friends as "Larry", he passed away on January 11, 2020 at the age of 87.
