Kathryn FULWIDER
Kathryn Fulwider (1915-2003) was a talented screenprint artist whose main subject was the towns and buildings that surrounded major mid-20th century American railroad industry. Born in Indiana, dubbed the “Crossroads of America” due to all the industrial transport of goods on rails and roads, it seems fitting that she would find herself attracted to this subject matter. Many livelihoods in her home state depended on this industry, making it a focal point of all aspects of life.
Her style is instantly recognizable, with bright colors illuminating her imagery, bordering on abstraction. With very few outlines and an ambiguous sense of perspective, her prints have a dreamlike quality to them. Her colorful interpretations of the mundane rural towns that existed to serve the railroad are imbued with a prideful nostalgia. She captures a time in America when industry was booming and the middle class was gaining a foothold in society, and her prints dance with this sense of opportunity with their color and vibrancy.
