Kaoru Saito’s (齋藤薫) mezzotints are a meditation of feminine beauty defined by luminous faces and graceful forms set against dramatic dark backgrounds and rich, saturated colors. Seductive and powerfully minimal, this master Japanese printmaker adopted the Western mezzotint technique to bring delicate light and shadow to his compelling compositions. Embracing the Japanese tradition of Bijin-e, the depiction of beautiful women, Saito transcends the tradition with his modern color palette and the nuanced, subtle expressions of his subjects. Highly regarded, with an international reputation, his works are widely collected. Born in 1931, Saito is a lifelong resident of Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture.
