Joseph-Marie-Justin GABRIEL

A French painter and printmaker born in Brignoles, Joseph-Marie-Justin Gabriel (1838-1923) was closely associated with the 19th-century Société des Aquafortistes, a key organization in the movement to revive original etching in France. His early works (c. 1864–65) are finely wrought small-format etchings of Provençal and Venetian landscapes, rendered with a tonal subtlety reminiscent of early Impressionist influences. The artist studied with Émile Loubon and Félix Ziem, and was active in Paris from the Salon of 1865 onward. Gabriel’s graphic oeuvre, though modest in quantity, reflects elegant draftsmanship and atmospheric depth.
