View full detailsJohanna Anna Maria “Hannie” Bal (1921–2012) was a key figure in post-war Dutch modernism and a member of the Nieuwe Haagse School, who also studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and Antwerp. She co-founded the Verve movement alongside her husband, Willem Schrofer, a notable figure in the mid-20th-century art scene, and the pair contributed richly to the visual language of mid-20th-century painting and printmaking. As one of the few women printmakers of her time in Northern Europe, Bal’s graphic work demonstrates her ability to blend geometric clarity with expressive delicacy.
