Jeannette MAXFIELD LEWIS

Jeannette Maxfield Lewis (1894-1982), who took her second last name from her husband, is today mostly remembered as a printmaker; an etcher in particular.  Trained in fine arts in Palo Alto, San Francisco, and briefly in New York, she was inspired by long travels through Europe, Mexico and the Southwestern US.  While she painted as early as the 1910s, she seems to have only picked up printmaking in the early 1930s.  This is, however, what she is remembered for most today.  Landscapes, in particular along the coast, dominate her oeuvre.  But cityscapes, village scenes, trees, still lives and caricatures of people's lives also all played a part in her aesthetic interests.  She was a fairly prolific etcher, printing mostly in small editions.
