Jean BRUSSELMANS

Jean Brusselmans (Belgian, 1884 - 1953), whose name suggest his origins, lived for most of his life in Dilbeek, just outside of Brussels, Belgium.  An artist who has to this day remained fairly unknown to the broader public, he is nevertheless one of the most interesting painters in Belgium in the 20th century.  While the style of other artists evolved with the taste of the times, Brusselmans devised his own naive aesthetic.  He started painting in a post-impressionist manner, but quickly settled on a style of simplicity, often using flat colors.  Brusselmans punctuated his career with printmaking, going back to it when the mood would strike.
