The Three Crows Inn, Gravesend

Date
1877
Description

L’Auberge des Trois Corbeaux (original French title)

Etching printed on japon paper, 1877.
Reference: Wentworth 29 i/iii.
From the edition of 50 with text in the banner; as issued in the Ten Etchings portfolio.  Very scarce as such.  In the second state the banner effaced; and in the third the sky is reworked with storm clouds, changing the mood of the composition from peaceful to unsettled.  Edition numbers in these subsequent states are unclear.  It seems the second state is also scarce.  The final state is fairly common.
Signed with the artist’s red monogram stamp (Lugt 1545).
Bearing the red “JCC” collector stamp (not in Lugt).
A fine impression with crisp lines.  Slight discoloration inside a prior mat window, unobtrusive.
