James Tissot: first selection from the JCC collection

As John was wrapping up a successful career as a banker in the mid 1980s, he saw an etching titled The Widower (original French title: Le Veuf) in the office of a colleague.  He fell in love with it, and bought it.  Over the next 20 years, John would systematically acquire any print by Tissot he didn't have.  While he initially bought impressions from the editions, he quickly focused his attention on the rare and the magnificent.  We are as proud to present this first selection of proofs and impressions from this private collection, as we were in helping assemble this collection in the first place.  The concentration of exceptional works presented here may obscure the fact that most of the etchings in this selection are extremely scarce or unique in their present condition.  It shouldn't!  And we encourage you to study these works one by one, carefully, and to reach out to us if you wish to receive larger images or additional information.  Seeing a collection of 19th century of this quality come to market is an rare occurrence and we hope you will find that it speaks to you as much as it does to us.
