Jacobus Jan KOEMAN

Jacobus Jan Koeman was born in 1889 in the small town of Edam in northern Holland. While attending the Kunstnijverheids School Quellinus as a young man, he was known to have spent long hours at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. So one might imagine him there, in front of Vermeer's Het Straatje (The Little Street) or perhaps dreaming of a second golden age of Dutch painting as he studied the Museum's extensive collection of works by Rembrandt. In the 1930s, he traveled extensively throughout his home country and also visited Paris and London. He was a watercolorist, painter, draftsman, sculptor, ceramist, binding designer, etcher, lithographer. He passed in 1978.
