Heywood Sumner

English artist and craftsman, Heywood Sumner (1853-1940) produced evocative etchings of English landscapes, sgraffito murals for churches, tapestry designs, and influential illustrations. His later years merged artistry with archaeology—his illustrated guidebooks and natural-history drawings of the New Forest remain evocative records of landscape and place. Among his many talents, Sumner exemplified the Arts and Crafts ideal: art as a lived, communal practice rooted in place, history, and craftsmanship.
