Hans FIGURA

Hans Figura (1898-1978) was a notable printmaker whose intricate depictions of European cities and landscapes earned him a widely-respected artistic reputation during the 1920s and 1930s. Figura was born near the Austro-Hungarian border and traveled between small towns during his childhood on the railroad line for which his father worked. He studied art in Vienna and after serving in World War I, he began an exhaustive tour of the major European cities, studying and drawing in Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, England, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. His etchings are delicate and well-balanced in composition and color. With almost hyperrealistic details, Figura transported the viewer across the globe. Within each artwork, there is often a veil or fog between foreground and background, drawing the viewer’s eye exactly where the artist wanted. Figura was an expert draftsman and created imagery of the world’s most beautiful places that heightened their stature and made his art recognizable to art collectors for decades to come.
