Gilbert HANCOX

Gilbert Hancox (British-American, 1908–1965) studied at the Art Students League after relocating from the London area to New York in his late teens. Early work as a theatrical scenic artist shaped his eye for dramatic composition, trompe-l'œil effects, and baroque detail. As a fine artist, his finely rendered surreal drawings and mixed-media works combine wit and a tactile sensuality. He remained active in the New York art world despite later health challenges, with examples of his work circulating regularly in the secondary market.
