Georges BRAQUE

One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Georges Braque is celebrated as the co-founder of Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso.
Printmaking became central to Braque’s mature work, particularly in his collaboration with Maeght Éditeur beginning in the 1940s. With their master printers, he created lithographs and etchings that translated his painterly ideas into graphic clarity. In the 1950s, his iconic bird motifs — symbols of freedom, flight, and spiritual ascent — emerged as recurring emblems in his prints, collage-derived compositions, and studio murals.
Even when printed “after” his own collages and drawings, as was common in his late editions, Braque supervised the process and signed the impressions, affirming their place within his œuvre. His prints remain prized for their lyrical balance of line, color, and metaphysical quiet — the distilled essence of a career that sought beauty in both the visible and the imagined.
